The Tin Drum

Gunther Grass’s about a self-made dwarf, that lived through the birth and death of Nazi Germany. Oskar Matzerath  narrates the novel from an insane asylum. He claims that he knowingly stopped his growth on his third birthday in protest against adulthood. However cognitively and intellectually he is normal. Additionally, Oskar is bothered by the death of his parents. When he speaks his voice is like a sounding brass and he turns to his passion his tin drum. Wielding his drum he recounts his depressing life, from the nightmare of the Nazi era through life in postwar Germany. Needless to say he is locked up for murder for which he cannot account.
