The story begins with the sisters working and discussing marriage at their fathers house in Beldover.Ursula a teacher and not so interested in marriage because she feels its a trap. Gudrun has just returned from college Art School in London. Not to mention the fact that the two drop by a local wedding where they see Gerald Cruch and Rupert Birken the two men that they will have affairs with. Additionally Birkin is a school inspector with a radical attitude about life. And Gerald is heir to a local mining operation.At the outset the men dislike each other , but after an encounter on a train their attitude change . Not only will they need a good attitude to win over the men the sisters will need team work.
