Wang Lung is a peasant, he lives in an earthen brick house  with his father who has arranged for him to marry a slave girl, name O-Lan from the great family of the House of Hwang. He takes her home and she works side by side with him in the fields. They started a family, bought land from the House of Hwang. When they became prosperous jealousy sets in also family problems.
